STORY

The Troublemaker is trying to stop us from Reading! He locked all of our bookmarks in the box and thinks if we  keep losing our place in the books, we will give up and stop reading. Well, the Troublemaker is wrong! We will never stop reading, but we do want our new Bookmarks! As a reward, if we can get the bookmarks out of the box before the Time is up, we will get to spend all the rest of the Time Reading! There might even be a fun new book to read in the box. Let’s hurry and open it and find out!

1. Directional Lock Clue here is how to set it ****WATCH THE VIDEO!!!
Print or have available a map of the world. It is up to the teacher to know if your students need the continents labeled. The audio recording should be queued up and ready for students to push play either on a desktop or iPad. You may also have the printed version of the reading available for students to follow along as they listen to the audio. Having Headphones available would be a great idea as the room may get noisy.
Students will read along and listen to the story of the continents that the Reader dreams of visiting. Beginning in North America, he will travel to South America (DOWN), to Africa (RIGHT) to Europe (UP) and to Asia (RIGHT). Australia and Antarctica are not visited.
2. Word Lock Clue here is how to set it
Print the Puzzle that shows the animals and children yawning. You may want to print it on card stock. Print one puzzle for each group. Cut the puzzle into 6-10 pieces. Place the pieces in an envelope. When the puzzle is put together, they will see the question, "Why do we Yawn?"  The answer is "We yawn when we are TIRED." TIRED is the solution to the 4 digit lock. For younger students, a Word Wall or area that they can go to check the spelling will be helpful.  A copy of the puzzle for each group, cut into pieces and placed in an envelope will be in the 3 digit lock box. When the groups open the 3 digit box, they will take one set of puzzle pieces and then re-lock the box.
3. 4 Digit Lock Clue here is how to set it
Print the images of the little boy with the cape and place on the table. Each image has a synonym for brave written under it. (The little boy feels brave when he is wearing the cape.)  When the students put the words in ABC order, the combination to the 4 digit lock will be revealed. BRAVE (4), DARING (2), FEARLESS (7), UNAFRAID (3). There are additional images of the little boy and the cape for teachers who want to customize this clue.

4.  3 Digit Lock Clue - Print the  3 pages of Lauren Castillo's Character Sketches of Nana in the City, The Troublemaker and the The Reader. Using invisible ink spell the numbers FIVE, SIX, TWO, spelling one number on each Sketch.  Students will use the UV flashlight to find and read the number words. You may indicate order either by the placing the Sketches in order, or place a symbol or number in the corner of each Sketch. Inside the 3 digit lock box is a set of the Word Lock puzzle pieces for each group.
5. Key Lock - Print the images of the Doors. Print the poem "Nana lives in Apartment Three, by her door you will find the KEY!" Place the poem somewhere where students will see it. Hide the Doors around the room. Have doors with other numbers or no numbers as well. Hide a door with a 3 for each group.  You may attach the Key to the door, or write on it "Bring Door 3 to the teacher for the Key" and students will trade the door for the key and return it to you after unlocking the box.
Running the game with the Whole Class and one Breakout EDU box.
Each group will have a copy of the Locks Recording Sheet. They will keep track of combinations as they figure them out. They may test them along the way or you may only have them test them when they have figured them all out. If any combo is wrong, all the locks are replaced on the box and they try again. The 3 digit lock box should be in an area where groups are directed one at a time to figure out and try the combination.
